When the Tohoku earthquake and then tsunami first hit Japan, Rika Shimizu and Sonya Kuki instantly turned to Facebook, Twitter and texting to find loved ones amid the unfolding disaster. But in the chaos that followed, the friends' efforts to keep in touch via social media soon floundered.
