FITness COLUMN: Skating Rink/Eatery Poised To Roll Into East Village

FITness Columnist Connie Cook

JULY 23, 2009 -- Calling all retro-roller-skating stars. It’s nearly time to start burnin’ down the house with your slick set of quads and white lace-up boots with sparkly pink wheels.

East Village is soon to be the new home of Homies Cinnamon Roller Restaurant. It’s at 10th and J Street, and owned by Harold Rose, (“Butch” as he’s known to his homies). Patrons can smack down one of his delicious cinnamon rolls, pop on their skates and immediately burn off those tasty calories—while jammin’ out to tunes played by a live DJ.

Homies plans to open its doors on August 29th, in conjunction with Street Scene.

For exercise, roller skating rocks. It’s a complete and fun aerobic workout. You can burn about 350 calories if you skate moderately (6 mph) or if you really get your game on and pump it up to 10 mph, you can boost the burn to up to 600 calories an hour.

You can also experience outstanding aerobic benefits without pounding your joints. It’s less stressful on your knees. Roller skating really hones in on your legs by using natural and smooth side-to-side movements that exercise your adductor (inner thigh) and abductor (outer thigh) muscles.  It also requires a strong core, and back muscles, so you can get down into a lower, more aerodynamic posture to increase your speed.

If you’re just lacing up for the nostalgia of it all and want to have a little fun, join Homies Hip Hop Roller Class and learn some cool dance moves to incorporate into your laps. Why just cruise around the rink in circles when you can roll in style to the rhythm of the music? Besides, you’ll need some fresh moves when it’s time for the “couple skate.” (Ahhh, the adolescent make-out memories.)

Homies will also have an outdoor pet café, so your best little furry friend can tag along as you quietly hum “Xanadu,” and realize your roller skating dreams have come true in downtown San Diego.

Cant Wait
It sounds so much fun and totally different for downtown but so did East Village Tavern and look how well they have done. I have a dog and Love the pet friendly aspect of the biz. I will be sure to spread the word about Homies new spot. Keep me posted with updates and Grand Opening Events. Thanks

Butch Rose aka Homie is a fraud con artist
Butch Rose is a no good con man. He has stolen thousands of dollars from business partners. Look up all the law suits against him. DO NOT invest with this loser!

RE: Butch Rose aka Homie is a fraud con artist
There will always be haters if you want to look up butch look up the 10 news leadership award letter for his many works with kids and the many charities he has supported. Tahsha is a (FAKE) name from a former business partner NOT WELCOMED in the exciting New Downtown location. We can only pray for all the haters of the world.

Roller Skating ???
I heard about this and I live on the same block as the "new" Homies location and thought I'd stop by to see the place. I've been in San Diego for 15 years and I've seen his name around before. He had a beach location- PB or OB I think, and one at SDSU, then the Tierasanta one most recently. Here are my thoughts if anyone cares-
#1) I can't believe this guy is going to open yet another joint, all of his other locations have closed in less than 6 months. Either he's a very bad business man or the person above "Tahsha" is right. Where does he keep getting the money to open "new" restaurants when he's closing them faster than you can say "Homies Cinnimon Roll Roller Skating Rink". Any way you roll it- it's NOT good.
#2) Roller Skating? Where? There's not enough room to dance a jig in place let alone roller skate with your dog/cat/parrot/iguana.
#3) That brings me to the pet cafe. I love my cat, but I don't want to eat at a place where other peoples's dogs and cats are running around- yuck!
#3) Roller skating or not, this place will NOT be open by Street Scene. They've had a sign on the window for months and nothing has been done so don't hold your breath downtown.

Love Homies This unidenified lady (San Diego food lover) is a bit Clueless
Let me first say me my wife and my kids have been ,and are BIG FANS of the best Cinnamon Rolls anywhere from Homies. I have been here all my life my kids would come home from the junior lifeguard program and talk nonstop about the best cinnamon rolls ever! We,my wife and i finally tried them and have never had better since.

Point #1 of the clueless lady with the cat, Homies was in Mission beach from 1998 until 2003 so if you can count miss unidentified person oh i mean (San Diego food lover) i believe that covers more than 6 months. Not to mention the 4 or so years in Qualcomm Stadium. So much for your open /close comment."Faster than you can say clueless"
#2 after going to Petco Park for a day game this year we saw the owner working on the store. What an incredable layout 5000 sqr feet our family cant wait until it opens.

#3 The pet Cafe is nothing more the a cool patio built on the lot OUTSIDE so that if you walk your dog and dont want to go all the way home to drop off the dog you can go to the OUTSIDE Patio ORDER then eat with your four legged friend.
#4 Homies was in Tierrasanta location for more than 2 years again not 6 months.Again get your facts right lady.
Lastly we wnet by the Tierrasanta store and noticed the people there had changed the name but were still using Homies menu. They said they felt they wanted to do things different(BAD MOVE)already closed. . Homies found his new spot downtown. (Uptown Cafe) that took over Homies spot didnt even last 2 months so maybe you should write about that!since you have such an interest in Homies to follow them as long as we have... read more

Just calling like I see it-
Hey Stevie Sweetie-
You need to get your facts straight honey. You are wrong on ALL of your facts.
-The new location is not 5,000 sqft. Maybe 3,000 at best. Even if it was 5, that is not enough room for a skating rink.
-Give me a break. There's no way Homies was in Mission Beach 5 years.
-Homies didn't last in Tierrasanta 6 moonths at EITHER location. Thanks for reminding me he was not only in 1 but 2 locations. He got kicked out after only 4 months then moved into the center next door until he got kicked out of that location. My aunt lives in Tierrasanta so I know this for a fact. (We now go to Bud's Cafe- Best Cajun food in San Diego. Tierrasanta is so lucky Butch got kicked out and Bud got his spot.)
-I didn't even know he was Qualcomm, I guess that makes about 5 locations he didn't last 6 months.
- His cinnimon rolls are ok- I guess I'll give you that. But once mine was raw inside and I had to return it. The person behind the counter said they weren't as good as usual because the owner didn't make them himself. That was crap, I paid 3.50 for a bunk roll, they didn't even give me my money back, just another raw roll.

I don't know all the facts about why his restaruants have closed, I just know that he's had a lot of them come and go and why or how he's able to keep opening them is a wonder to me. Seems like he and his investors or partners have lost a lot of money over the years. If you can't stay in business, then you weren't making a profit. If you're closing your doors after 6 months, you're losing your shorts. That's business 101 my love.

In any case,... read more

STOP!!!!
I'm reading the comments here and what started off as good has turned very ugly, who are these people? Yes everyone is entitled to their opinion but c'mon already, lets be cheerful that we live in The Most Beautiful City in America and welcome new concepts and ideas to any part of San Diego. Ugliness and Negativity takes up so much more energy so here's my positive input. I'm reading the fitness column here about Calling all retro-roller-skating stars and think wow I have not been roller skating in forever. My girlfriends and I used to go all the time to the one they used to have in La Mesa. I live in Golden Hill and jog to the Embarcadero about 3-4 times a week and I frequent downtown for breakfast, lunch and dinner because of so many different varieties of food to choose from and also the different things to do downtown. I think downtown would be a great spot for a roller rink that is pet friendly. I'm not sure if it will be a full size rink but who cares. I know my girls and I would have some laughs and talk about the roller boys from the past that we had crushes on. The guys who would bounce up and down while skating backwards, you know the ones. Anyway as far as the pets, I don't have any but every cute dog or puppy I see downtown I stop to pet most of the time. I would not, not eat at a place if there were pets allowed. I've traveled all over Europe and pets are in grocery stores, cafe's, restaurants, pubs, department stores. Their everywhere people are. I like the idea and I have not tasted Homies Cinnamon rolls but I'm sure they have to taste better than... read more

Thank you Vanessa. Possitive outlook. How refreashing!
Wow Homie,so much Buzz.I agree with vanessa lets embrace a new venture.walt disney failed many times before he finally got it right and i think that disney thing turned out ok.Homies may never be walt but they are trying to makes things happen that just may be a good time for all of us, lets hope it works out, we do live in such a great place and with so many unpleasent things in the world going on putting on a pair of skates on downtown and eating a warm cinnamon roll sounds like a great time to me,just one more cool thing to add to East Village. Keep possitve, bitterness is no fun from or for anyone. Roll forward Hoime and good luck!

This con man has had plenty of opportunities to be successful and he would rather lie, cheat and steal. Stay away from Butch, "The Baker" Harold Douglas, Homies, Mr. Rose.

Very Fishy
I was one of those potential investors in Homies Cinnamon Roll Restaurant. And I gladly decided to pass.

His name is HAROLD Rose not Butch Rose. When I asked him if "Butch" was his original first name by birth, he originally told me it was; I found out different later. Kind of hard to research someone when he doesn't give you his full legal name. He and his female "partner" love to let you know he is a church going man. Well how dare anyone question a church going man. right? haha..

He was looking for a small investment to start. After I showed some interest it was made clear to me that my investment was not very much and that I really needed to invest more. When I started to back out he started to ask for less. He refused to show me any of his financial records. Everything was carried out in a rushed manner and he made it clear to me that I was either in or out and that he would not reveal his books and that I would be missing out on the opportunity of my life.

This guy doesn't seem to have any permanent home and it seems his stores either close down pretty fast or stop short of opening. Melody's post haha.. is signed by "sam" at the moment, though that can always be edited later. Confusion? Is this Butch himself? Who knows? I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of the posts here were posted by Mr. Rose.

Based on my own experience and the end results of his businesses(including the now failed business downtown) the guy seems shady. But don't take my word for it. Do the research yourself.

I am grateful I didn't make the investment and I am doing this so it shows up... read more

RE: Very Fishy
You got very, very lucky! My husband and I got the same hard sell from Harold Rose a few years back. Needless to say we got taken for. Lost all our money. Tried to sue but was told it would cost us more money then it was worth. No point in throwing good money after bad. Although we wished we did have the extra money just to be able to throw this crook in jail. Please, please do not invest with this jerk and please do not pratonize his business.

Man, it's HARD to beleive this joker is at it AGAIN! How many fat chicks does he have to keep screwing to keep the money flowing? Butch.. seems to me like it'd be easier to make an honest living then to have to do what you're doing, and brother I've seen what/who you've been doing and it ain't pretty. Surprised your dick hasn't shriveled up and fallen off already. The only reason your butt ain't behind bars is because you've got no money, house, car or assets to go after. Stop screwing hard working people out of there money. And by "hard working people" I mean desperate fat chicks. Dude- you suck the big cinnimon roll!
