TRAFFIC: Red-Light Cameras are a Fiscal Crutch, not a Safety Measure

Be safe, but say no to traffic cameras.

JUNE 1, 2009 -- San Diego has tried to get it right with red-light traffic cameras in the past, to ill-effect. Now they’re back, and at three new intersections and the 30-day warning period is over.

Now, rather than a warning, you get a ticket if the camera photographs your vehicle moving through an intersection after the light has turned red. There are none downtown--yet. The three spots newly in effect are: Balboa Avenue at Kearny Villa Road, in Kearny Mesa; North Torrey Pines Road at Genesee Avenue, in Torrey Pines; and Rosecrans Street at Nimitz Boulevard.

This is a small step in the wrong direction, Big Brother. The tickets carry a minimum fine of $436. Sure, drunk drivers and those who endanger life and limb should be fined and taken off the streets. Pushing a light is not ever a good idea, but it’s not always an infraction that needs to be enforced as a black/white issue.

There are days when you’re late to pick up a child a day care, for example. And there are times when seconds count for matters that are essential to your life and can’t be explained to a camera. The classic case was the expectant father who roared through a red light and was pulled over by a cop. When told of the impending bundle of joy the cop almost always threw on his lights and yelled, “Follow me to the hospital!”

We can’t put a police officer at every intersection to sort through the nuance of every infraction, and nobody should be above the law. But red-light traffic cameras are more of a fiscal crutch than a reasonable response to traffic safety. They should go.

Slave to the Traffic Light
I'd rather have breathilizers installed in cars that prevent a start with DUI level exhales than panic every time I approach one of these intersection during a yellow light.

Lights, Camera, Expensive Tickets
I was jogging in downtown San Luis Obispo one quiet Sunday morning in my college years when a family in a truck got their green light and ventured forward with confidence into the intersection. One problem: Someone coming from the other direction felt compelled to increase their speed to blast through to the other side. The collision was astounding. I rushed into a corner coffee shop to have someone call for an ambulance. I came back out to see family members bloodied and dazed, clearly in shock, two able to stumble out, others not so lucky.

The old joke goes that in California a yellow light means to speed up.

Does the camera technology really work properly? Are they fairly calibrated? Are you 100% guilty if the camera clicks you? Are the camera-ready intersections clearly marked for all to think about?

The City sets them up to make money. The best thing they can do is to prevent accidents.

Red Light Camera
I was on my way home at 10:45 PM I was at Balboa Avenue going west and was sitting at the red light at Balboa and Kearny Villa Road. My friend and I had noticed that there was a red light camera installed. The light changed green and we were going when all of a sudden the lights flashed and were taking pictures. The light was green then it was red before I even got all the way across the street. What the hell is that. I think the red light cameras are great but this is a joke when the city is setting the lights to trigger so fast you don't have time to get across. I was the only car go west bound on Balboa at that time and one car sitting on the south bound Kearny Villa Road in the turn lane to go east on Balboa.

NO THEY ARE NOT FAIRLY CALIBRATED....NO YOU ARE NOT 100% GUILTY IF THE CAMERA CLICKS....YES THEY ARE CLEARLY MARKED.

I will be fighting this the City wants money but not at the expense of playing dirty with the red light cameras being set to go off so fast.

Flash blindness helps drivers, right?
The set of cameras on Washington Street in Hillcrest have the added safety effect of spot-blinding drivers who are waiting properly at the intersection.

If the City wants to sacrifice safety for cash, let's have gladiatorial combat @ Qualcomm instead. I'd like to be able to drive safely.
